2019 Minimum Wage for Cambodian Garment and Footwear Workers Set at US$182

Labour Advisory Council (LAC) has freshly decided to select US$177, a figure set as the raise to the monthly minimum wage for the garment and footwear workers for next year, according to a press release of the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.

The vote for the figure of US$177, which was then upped additional-five-dollar recommendation of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), was held in the presence of H.E. Ith Samheng, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, during the 19th Meeting of the council this afternoon. The new wage of US$182 will take effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

The figure of US$177 was chosen among the unions' request of US$182, and the RGC's recommendation and the factory employers' offer of US$177.

This morning, at the celebration of the Teachers' Day 2018 at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen also announced that the monthly minimum wage for garment and textile workers would not be less than US$180.

The minimum wage in Cambodia is higher than that in Vietnam (US$170 in some part of the country), Indonesia and Laos (around US$110), India (US$77), and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (US$67), he pointed out.

The RGC sets its policy on minimum wage raise for the garment and footwear workers every year. The current monthly minimum wage for the garment and footwear workers is US$170, up from US$153 in 2017.

For 2019, the wage will rise to US$182 per month without counting other benefits and allowances.
