Cambodia Hosts Business Matching to Promote Silk Sector

A business matching between Cambodian and Chinese silk companies was organised here on May 2 by the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce to give an opportunity to both sides to exchange information and share experience in order to boost the development of luxurious silk sector in the Kingdom.

In his opening speech, H.E. Pan Sorasak highlighted the ministry's efforts in developing the luxurious silk sector through Cambodia Export Diversification and Expansion (CEDEP) I of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) and creation of National Silk Commission along with Cambodia National Silk Strategy 2016-2020.

The project (CEDEP) has helped strengthening the capacity of Cambodian silk producers related to strategies of silk thread quality control, design, marketing strategy and planning, customer service, and so on, underlined H.E. Minister.

H.E. Pan Sorasak went on to say that the National Silk Commission has been using Cambodia National Silk Strategy 2016-2020 as a road map to seek more financial and technical assistance from the EIF Secretariat and other international development partners in order to develop Cambodian luxurious silk value chain and support the operation of the 14 Cambodian silk companies, he added.

In Cambodia, silk is considered as a potential product for export as stated in Cambodia Trade Integration Strategy (CTIS). Silk sector has created jobs and generated income for around 20,000 weavers, most of them are women living in rural areas.
