Cambodia, Sierra Leone Discuss Cooperation in Agriculture

Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries H.E. Veng Sakhon held a bilateral meeting here yesterday with his visiting counterpart from Sierra Leone, H.E. Joseph J. Ndanema.

According to a news release of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the meeting focused on cooperation in agriculture between the two countries and possibility to export Cambodia's milled rice to Sierra Leone in the near future.

H.E. Joseph J. Ndanema praised Cambodia for its progress in all sectors, mainly agriculture from which his country can learn and draw experience. He also lauded the Cambodian rice recognised internationally for its quality, taste and fragrance.

H.E. Minister said the main purpose of his visit to Cambodia is to study the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding on export of Cambodia's milled rice to Sierra Leone.

For his part, H.E. Veng Sakhon told his guests of Cambodia's development efforts, from a war-torn country with food insecurity to a peaceful country with 5.5 million tons of rice surplus.

The Cambodian agriculture minister also briefed H.E. Joseph J. Ndanema on the Royal Government's strategic plan and development policy of supporting infrastructure; human resource development; agricultural diversification, commercialisation and agricultural modernisation; processing and packaging promotion to increase the export of agricultural products.

Both sides also exchanged experience and lessons learnt related to human resource training and development; organisation and management of farmers' community; agricultural promotion; market information and price of agricultural products; sanitary and phytosanitary standards for local and international markets, enhancement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), contract farming; and so on.
