Commerce Minister Optimistic of Cassava Sector

Cambodian Commerce Minister H.E. Pan Sorasak has expressed his strong belief in the newly-endorsed National Cassava Sector Development Policy (NCSDP).

NCSDP will transform Cambodia into a place of cassava processing and supply industry, stressed the minister while presiding over the document handover-receiving at the ministry office yesterday.

NCSDP provides clear vision and strategies to prepare main value chains in order to increase the yields and price of cassava and in response to local and foreign markets, he added.

Cassava is the second most potential food crop after rice and the food of the 21st Century. Cambodia is ranked 8th among the ten biggest cassava producers in the world. Cassava is cultivated in 13 Cambodian provinces on a total land area of more than 570,000 ha with a yield of over 13 million tons a year.

National Cassava Sector Development Policy was drafted by an inter-ministerial committee in collaboration with the private sector and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
