Constitutional Council Confirms Constitutionality of Amendment to Law on Political Parties

The Constitutional Council has announced the constitutionality of the proposed amendment to Article 45 of the Law on Political Parties, according to its press release.

In a plenary session held here this morning under the chairmanship of their President H.E. Im Chhun Lim, the eight members of the Constitutional Council unanimously agreed with the constitutionality of the proposed amendment.

The proposed amendment to the Law on Political Parties was approved by the National Assembly on Dec. 13, 2018 and endorsed by the Senate on Dec. 25.

Proposed by 87 lawmakers, the amendment states, any persons, who are banned by the court from political activities, will be granted their full rights to do politics after passing the validity of the ban defined by the Supreme Court's verdict or in case those persons are granted the royal pardon by His Majesty the King proposed by the Prime Minister at the request of Interior Minister.
