“Koh Trung Pomelo” Gains GI Status

AKP Phnom Penh,Koh Trung Pomelo, a traditional product of Kratie province, has got the geographical indication (GI) status.

The official launch of Koh Trung Pomelo GI status took place in Sangkat Koh Trung of Kratie city yesterday under the presidency of H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, and H.E. Va Thorn, Governor of Kratie province, with representatives of World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in attendance.

On the occasion, H.E. Pan Sorasak said the Koh Trung Pomelo GI status will contribute to increasing job opportunities and income and to reducing migration of local people as well as to enhancing national tourism.

Ms. Alexandra Grazioli, Representative of WIPO, welcomed the launch of Koh Trung Pomelo GI status, saying that it is another success of the Ministry of Commerce as well as the Royal Government of Cambodia in the intellectual property sector to boost local economic development.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, 331 households are growing pomelo in Koh Trung, and only 155 of them are members of Koh Trung Pomelo Grower Association.

Besides Koh Trung pomelo, Kampot pepper and Kampong Speu palm sugar have also gained GI status.
