Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has announced measures to restrict herbicide supply and use across Cambodia.

In his letter issued yesterday, H.E. Minister Veng Sakhon ordered his line officials to check all stores supplying agrichemical in order to freeze the distribution of herbicide until further notice.

The minister also called for appropriate technical instruction about side effects of all agrichemical particularly herbicide for farmers, including the use, preservation, and the disposal of its remains.

Owners of economic concession lands for agricultural purpose, underlined the minister in the letter, who import agrichemical for their respective use need to inform and consult with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

This is the second notice of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries following early May's poisoning that killed at least 13 people and injured many in Chetr Borei district of Kratie province.

Investigation by Ministry of Health has found that the poisoning was resulted by a combination of contaminated water by herbicides and methanol-laced rice wine.

On May 25, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued its first notice in response to the case, requiring all agrichemical suppliers to cease importing all types of herbicide.
