Ministry of Justice Reviewing 523 Convicts for Water Festival’s Pardon

For the upcoming Water Festival, Ministry of Justice is considering endorsement of 523 requested prisoners for royal pardon.

The update was shared by Mr. Soch Sophannara, Deputy Director General of Prosecution and Penal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice following a recent review by the ministry's committee chaired by its Minister H.E. Ang Vong Vathana.

Of the said inmates, he added, 37 are female, and they have been nominated from prison and correctional centres throughout Cambodia.

On humanitarian basis, the Royal Government of Cambodia is offering royal pardon opportunities to prisoners during the country's key celebrations, including Water Festival, Khmer New Year, and Visak Bochea. But this year, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen requested three more occasions: Pchum Ben Festival, Independence Day and inauguration of the Win-Win Memorial later this year.

The result of the committee's decision on requested prisoners to grant royal pardon will be submitted to Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen for his endorsement to His Majesty the King for the forgiveness.

Cambodia has currently 31,226 prisoners 2,663 of them are female and on Pchum Ben Festival last month, 119 convicts received royal pardon.
